Take a piano. The keys begin, the keys end. You know there are eightyeight of them, nobody can tell you any different. They are not infinite. You are infinite. And on these keys the music that you can make is infinite. I like that. That I can live by. What I didn't see. In all that sprawling city there was everything except an end. There was no end. What I did not see was where the whole thing came to an end. The end of the world... You get me up on that gangway and you're rolling out in front of me a keyboard of millions of keys, millions and billions of keys that never end.That they never end. That keyboard is infinite. And if that keyboard is infinite, then on that keyboard there is no music you can play. You're sitting on the wrong bench. That's God's piano. How do you choose just one? One woman, one house, one piece of land to call your own, one landscape to look at, one way to die... I was born on this ship, and the world passed me by, but two thousand people at a time. And there were wishes here, but never more than fit between prow and stern. You played out your happiness, but on a piano that was not infinite. I learned to live that way.

Review of ''The Legend of 1900''
I read a lot of psychological book and I learned more about people's psychological problems. So when I watch this movie, I focused a lot on the Psychology. of the actor and I was interested in this book.
Identity is determined by genetic endowment, shaped by environment, and influenced by chance events. People are influenced by their environment and, in turn, influence their environment. He was born on this ship, never more than fit between prow and stern and the world passed me by. .He spent all his life in a boat. The environment was special, so he had a special character which was different form the other.
He never walked into the land. At a time, he decided to go to the land, but when walked in the half of the hanging ladder, he not dare to go down, and felt at lost. As he said “There were thousands of them! And how do you do it down there？How do you choose just one? One woman, one house, one piece of land to call your own, one landscape to look at, one way to die...”“All that city you just could not see an end to it.”.
All his life, just facing the sea and the piano, all the land for him was an uncertainty. He did not know what to do and where to go. He could not face the real world, nothing can instead of his attachment to the ship, even the power of love. He is a person of non-normal psychology 。
From a view of psychology, infant safety and caressing environment is very important for his healthy growth. We know, when the toddler tried to walk ,only mother within the scope of his vision he dare to move forward, and he knew it was safe. Mother can give us enough sense of security.
We knew, 1900 was abandoned at birth，was born without love. There are no attachment to the object, only in the boat he felt safe. he never walked into real social and could not play his role in society, he felt at loss.
From a view of psychology. he faced a self- identity crisis, He could not recognize himself, did not find out who he was and what his strength and weakness was, not knowing, what kind
of person he would be in the various world. So he just stood on the ship, repeating a bumpy journey, but dare not go into the community
How to obtain self-identity., is a major obstacle to for most college students to develop in nowadays. The self-identity is formed in response to a number of options: for example, what kind of career I want, what position I belong to in the society .
Some students are going through an identity crisis and are endeavoring to find out who they are and what their strengths and weaknesses are. As a college student, we are growing in our understanding of ourselves, others , and the world in which we live. Only in this way , can we grow with a healthy psychology and make contribute to our society.
"The Legend of 1900" is unique in many ways, the first being that it is an Italian film with English-speaking characters. Tim Roth who has been cast as a villian most of his career does a remarkable job as the adult '1900', the simple man, a gifted piano player, who had a his own particular take on life. The story begins as a ship worker is crawling around the ballroom floor, looking for valuables lost by the wealthy guests, but instead finds a baby. It is the New Year 1900, thus the baby's name. He is raised in the bowels of the ship until at about age 8 or 10 he is noticed playing the piano. He eventually becomes the ship's piano player, and his reputation spreads until Jelly Roll Morton takes a voyage and challenges '1900.' In the end, he lit his cigarette on the hot piano strings!
Some spoilers - The film actually starts in more modern times as the trumpet player friend of 1900's is selling his horn and telling the 'Legend of 1900' after the shopkeeper shows him a patched-together record of the piano composition that was lost years earlier, parts hidden in the piano. He tells the story in a series of flashbacks, and at the end finds out the old ship has been stripped of all valuables and is to be sunk the next day by dynamite. But he just knows '1900' must still be aboard the ship, because he knew he never could leave. So he borrows the record and a player and goes to every different part of the dilapidated ship, playing the song, hoping to lure out '1900'. Earlier in the film '1900' said, "My music will never go anywhere without me" and that is why the master disk never left the ship until the piano, with the broken recods hidden in it, ended up in the shop also.
More spoilers - '1900' almost left the ship once, he was going to visit NYC and a pretty girl he met, was half-way down the gangplank, suitcase in hand, well-wishers waving goodby, he paused a long time, threw his hat into the water, and went back on the ship. Only years later, as he and his friend spoke in the bowels of the old ship did he explain, "I looked at the city and could not see an 'end.' A piano has 88 keys, you know where it starts and where it ends. But the city alone has hundreds of miles of
streets, how do you know which one to take, which girl to love, which house to buy? I could not see an 'end' so I had to stay on the ship." And he did, he had become so accustomed to the small, contained world of the ship that he could not cope with the greater world. Even though it is a movie, one second we are seeing '1900' with a smile, musing about heaven, and the next moment a horrific blast. It is hard to not get jolted by the image.
At 120 minutes this film requires some patience, and the desire to see good character studies over non-stop action. It is impossible to describe in words how good Tim Roth is in this role. We always knew he could play the bad guy, this film crystallizes his overall talent as one of the best in the business. A remarkable story, a legend, with a remarkable character. This is a beautiful, poetic film, with an enthralling story, beautiful cinematography, and lovely score.A superb film！

He was born at sea, and dead in the sea. He never left the ship.His life was firmly connected with sea and piano, which made his life a legend. His name is Danny Boodmann TD Lemon 1900, but everybody just called him 1900. He first contact piano when he was still a child, in which he played the grace music. It swiftly became apparent that 1900 is a gifted – possibly even genius – pianist. In the subsequent years, 1900 always stayed in the ship playing piano for the passengers who came and went until a girl’s emergence.When he was playing the piano in the cabin, he accidentally glimpse a girl in the aboard. She is very beautiful, and he fall in love with her. After all, the girl would get off the ship. But he didn’t. In the end, when the boat was about to be exploded, no one knew that 1900 was still in, but his only friend Max Tooney. Max insisted that 1900 was in his boat, so he trid to persuade the captain to research the boat. When he found 1900, 1900 refused to left. And finally, he died with the sound of an explosion, with his legend of piano.
1900 has gone, but I believe he will continue to play his piano in the paradise, if there exists heaven.
It’s an excellent movie that is worthy of everyone’s watching.
The impression of 《the legend 1900》 《The Legend of 1900》 showed us a man who borned ,growed up and died in the ship。The born of his life was just for the piano。It also just looked like our real life, someone might be not willing to leave his homeland all his life, even the land was barren, desolateand dangerous, and even the outside world was numerous and colorful, gold and silver throughout all the land。 For a man whose home was this ship, his full happy ，sad ，dream passion were all in this ship。 Therefore ，he still won't choose to leave finally 。There was a monologue of the masters, he said that his choice was not for seeing the building which maked him feel afraid。The end of world was out of sight ，which was the truth。 Piano keys and the ship decks could be feld from the beginning to the ending。He could use the limited keyboard to creat infinite music 。In here, he could control it。In here ， he just was himself。There were no beginning and end in this world, he had no way to control his life, emotion and music。 He only could choose what he could choose, what he could drive the life way。If there was a life style which he couldn't drive, he would rather discard it ! A lot of people could not understand his choice, however, I want to remind one thing that this was his choice。There must have his reasons
behind one’s choice , you never could become another one , and you didn't have his experience, so you didn't really know what he thought。 The only one thing you could do was to make your choice a
nd go your way。

Like The Shawshank Redemption, the legend of 1900 relates a story using the second perspective. But frankly speaking, the trumpet player is far from satisfactory than Red. That is not to say the play is terrible, it’s just because Morgan Freeman is so great that I almost consider the legend of 1900 as a plagiarized work when I saw it first.
But when saw it in second time, the great skill of Tornatore, which is the ability to shape the roles vividly, become obvious. It is better to consider 1900 as a group of people, not a specific individual. Maybe it is a reason why the screenwriter doesn’t give him a name. Some people say 1900 is a reflection of the fate of artists. And their loneliness contributes to their artistic quality.
1900, being adopted by a boiler man, is an abandoned infant. Unfortunately, his adoptive father died in an accident when 1900 is eight years old. On one hand, the immense talent makes him as a self-taught piano master. On the other hand, the fate also let him be deeply suspicious about the secular world. Even if meet a young girl he loved at the first sight, thinking over and over, he ultimately give up the impulse to find his first lover. Feeling that his fate is tied to the ship, 1900 cannot bring himself to leave the only home he has known. In the end, the Virginian blows up and sinks, with 1900 still aboard.
This is an unreal marvel, a sentimental story, a genius interweaved with the ocean, steamboat, piano, land, loneliness and friendship. As the most European movies, the legend of 1900 also fills with an arm of insinuations. As an abandoned baby in the ship, a piano master in born, 1900 spent his whole life on the ship and never get off, strolling in the deck while other passengers are suffering from the seasickness. He can’t even get off the boat to looking for the woman he loved deeply. But what’s the key to understand these insinuations? There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes. From my own perspective it is the “choice”.
The human beings are faced with the choice at all time. Each choice, big or small, decides the direction of our life. 1900 choose to stay in the boat, even all the passengers are sorely tempted to throw him overboard. He said: “Land is a ship too big for me.” He is anxious about the sense of no end, while the key of piano are not infinite, and that lets him relieved.
In fact, when compared with the real world, the life of 1900 has something
unreal. 1900 never contact piano before, but when he play it first, the beautiful music springs from his dexterous hands so naturally. Besides, how a person who never has the formal education can speak in so poetic language? And how he gets the food he needs to survive before Max
finds him in that abandoned ship? However, the most controversial spot is the end of the movie: the hero’s conversation with Max. I really don’t agree with the 1900’s explanation why he doesn’t want to go off the ship at the very beginning, thinking he had a negative attitude towards life. But I finally understand the reason. Instead of playing the piano for others or for money, he desires to continue his love for piano in heaven, to play his own music.
Just like the 1900, we all have our own world, and desire to live a so-called life in the demarcated safe zone. But can we? I still remember such words: “Take a piano. The keys begin, the keys end. You know there are eighty-eight of them, nobody can tell you any different. They are not infinite. You are infinite. And on these keys the music that you can make is infinite. I like that. That I can live by.” 1900 compresses his life into this side to another, then enlarges into the infinite music he can make on the only 88 keys.
Now take the view from piano to the life itself. The freedom of society is infinite, but what a little pleasure can we enjoy from it? Life resembles a huddled adventure, so we are more prone to have a great admiration to these people who concentrate on a specific area always .Sometimes when be tortured by fate, resisting the change can offers us a sense of security. In other words, the human beings are may stronger than society if we can resist the extra temptation from the secular world. That’s what the movie want to tell us I think.

1900, an abandoned baby who was taken care by Danny Bordman, one of the crews in the ship virginia. 1900 was the year when the crew discovered the baby, thus, the boy was named 1900. Danny loved 1900 very much, he taught him to read and write,and never let him suffer. But because there is no any documents such as birth certificate, Danny was afraid that 1900 would be hurted by others, so he told him not to leave the ship. Danny died several years later and at that time, 1900wan entirely isolated. 1900 was a geinius and he knew how to play piano without being taught.He got his own style and won the applause from the passengers. However he wasn’t happy at all. What he was searching for was love and care. Yet he couldn’t find them.So 1900 suffered from loneliness and was afraid of changes.
The only companion of 1900 was the piano, and he got used to expressing himself via music. Yet could the piano share with him? Could the music bo the tonic for his loneliness? The poor man has no choice.He was born to be loneliness. Maybe it was his fate.

In a storm, he encountered Max who was seesick.The two men were very congenial. From the on, Max became 1900’s life confidant.
Max admired 1900’s music talent, but was also sorrry for his stubborn refuse to get onto the land. He wanted 1900 to show his talents, and be recognised by the world, gain fame and forture, live a good life. But for 1900, the world was too far away. He couldn’t understand it.
Later, people praised 1900’s music talents. The father of jazz, Jelly Roll Morton, who considered himself unsurpassable, thus to challenge with 1900. Eventually 1900 won. The game brought 1900 with reputation. A music publisher hoped his recording, and guaranteed that he would be rich and famous. Until he met a girl, who was simple and charming.That day he wan recording, the girl came to wash her face. She dried her face with a towel, and looked at the window as a mirror. At that moment, 1900 fell in love with her, and played a sentimental beautiful song.
When the record was finished,1900 didn’t give the record to the publisher, because he didn’t let others to take his music away from him. He wanted to send it to the unknown girl, but failed. 1900 could not conceal his sorrow, he threw thw ieces
in the trash.Max hide the fragments in the piano, and that was the only record of music 1900 left.
After the girl left the boat, 1900 was still playing his piano, but his heart was still missing the girl.Max persuasion and longing for love moved 1900, he finally decided to get off the ship and get onto the strange land. That day, all the crew said goodbye to him, he wore a camel’s hair coat that Max gave to him, slowly stepped oat ladder, but when he got halfway of the ladder, he looked at the large New York blankly, gazed for a moment, suddenly removed the hat and threw it out. Then 1900 tured arround and returned to the boat. He said to Max that he would never get off, since then he lost the world on the land.
Untill many year later, the World War Two ended, and long after Max left Virginia, Max got a news that the ship would be exploded. He believed that 1900 was still on the boat , but 1900 did not appear. Untill the ship was about to be blowed up. Max played the record in the boat alone, 1900 appeared in the corner, but he refused to get off. He told the reason why he failed to get out: the world was too wide, and he was afraid of strangers, the endless city streets, like the innumberable keys on the piano, made him feel fare.He would quiz the stage of life rather than face the endless life. Max couldn’t persuade him to get off,
and left saldly. Finally he saw the boat and 1900 destroyed by bombs in the distance.
Though it is a tragedy, but I think 1900 is a brave hero. He is a man so brave, that he can play the imaginary piano when exploded with the ship he was born, lived and died in. Yet he is a man so scared, that he canno face the city life we are living everyday. He is a man so perceptive, taht he could use his music language to describe exactly other’secrets.
Yet he is a man so insensitive that he’d rather diappear after a gentle kiss on his beloved while she’s aspleep than unburden himself and tell her ‘I LOVE YOU’.
This man is Danny Berdman T.D. Lemon 1900 who is also known as simply "1900". A man never existed. He has never set foot on land in his entire life. No ID. No passport. No Visa. No parents. No birthday. Nothing in the world belongs to him except his music. So he played it.
For the first class guests.
For the third class members.
For the girl at the window.
For the darkness of the night.
For the heartbeat of his own.
For the sea-- his eternal home.
My life is much more colorful than 1900, but Why? Why I am so envious of 1900’s simple life? I am envious of his loneliness, his pure mind, his natural, native face.
We are all distinctive at first,but when we grow up. We learn to think about other’s feelings,other’s attitude to us.
So we try to do something we don’t really want to do to please them.We are trying to get along with the people.We are trying to adapt ourselves to the society.Maybe sometimes the results were disappointing.We still try our best to do such things.
However,in fact,we are changed.
We are trying to be someone else.
