Morning everyone,today i will introduce a film to you all.its name is the legend of 1900,its not talk about stories happened in 1900 ,its mainly about a pianist who was born, lived and died in a ship and never left the ship with a special name .yes his name is 1900 .an orphan was adopted by a black man working on the ship
To be honest i have download this film for a long time ,but i didn't watch it ,because i think it won't be very interesting .just a pianist ,what wonderful story can happen to him ?
But recently i just opened it by accident ,firstly it was really very dull ,no famous film star ,no interesting plot,no wonderful kungfu.but finally my eyesight was caught by the pianist , He's a man so intelligent, that he can play the piano as if he has four arms,and also he's a man so stupid that he chose to stay on the ship gone with the wind and storm while he can ashore and become the most famous pianist.what's more ,at the end when the ship should be destroyed he still refused to leave and finally died with the ship.
Someone may see this film as a tragedy,but is it really one ?maybe the end was indeed so sad ,most of us would feel its a pity to see his died .But one thing is for sure: this man is a real artist--pianist. Only a man like him can dance with the piano in a terrifying storm. Only a man like him can give up desire of reputation and money on the land. Only a man like him... can have such a beautiful story to tell... It is really difficult to image what will happen if 1900 set foot on land ?start an ordinary life and become vulgar ,be absorbed in chasing fame and fortune .no ,we don't want to see that ,so the story just stop here ,even painful and sad .
Just let us remember him A man never existed. He has never set foot on land in his entire life. No ID. No passport. No Visa. No parents. No birthday. Nothing in the world belongs to him except his music.
"The Legend of 1900" is unique in many ways, the first being that it is an Italian film with English-speaking characters. Tim Roth who has been cast as a villian most of his career does a remarkable job as the adult '1900', the simple man, a gifted piano player, who had a his own particular take on life. The story begins as a ship worker is crawling around the ballroom floor, looking for valuables lost by the wealthy guests, but instead finds a baby. It is the New Year 1900, thus the baby's name. He is raised in the bowels of the ship until at about age 8 or 10 he is noticed playing the piano. He eventually becomes the ship's piano player, and his reputation spreads until Jelly Roll Morton takes a voyage and challenges '1900.' In the end, he lit his cigarette on the hot piano strings!
Some spoilers - The film actually starts in more modern times as the trumpet player friend of 1900's is selling his horn and telling the 'Legend of 1900' after the shopkeeper shows him a patched-together record of the piano composition that was lost years earlier, parts hidden in the piano. He tells the story in a series of flashbacks, and at the end finds out the old ship has been stripped of all valuables and is to be sunk the next day by dynamite. But he just knows '1900' must still be aboard the ship, because he knew he never could leave. So he borrows the record and a player and goes to every different part of the dilapidated ship, playing the song, hoping to lure out '1900'. Earlier in the film '1900' said, "My music will never go anywhere without me" and that is why the master disk never left the ship until the piano, with the broken recods hidden in it, ended up in the shop also.
More spoilers - '1900' almost left the ship once, he was going to visit NYC and a pretty girl he met, was half-way down the gangplank, suitcase in hand, well-wishers waving goodby, he paused a long time, threw his hat into the water, and went back on the ship. Only years later, as he and his friend spoke in the bowels of the old ship did he explain, "I looked at the city and could not see an 'end.' A piano has 88 keys, you know where it starts and where it ends. But the city alone has hundreds of miles of
streets, how do you know which one to take, which girl to love, which house to buy? I could not see an 'end' so I had to stay on the ship." And he did, he had become so accustomed to the small, contained world of the ship that he could not cope with the greater world. Even though it is a movie, one second we are seeing '1900' with a smile, musing about heaven, and the next moment a horrific blast. It is hard to not get jolted by the image.
At 120 minutes this film requires some patience, and the desire to see good character studies over non-stop action. It is impossible to describe in words how good Tim Roth is in this role. We always knew he could play the bad guy, this film crystallizes his overall talent as one of the best in the business. A remarkable story, a legend, with a remarkable character. This is a beautiful, poetic film, with an enthralling story, beautiful cinematography, and lovely score.A superb film！
The Legend of 1900
1900, an abandoned baby who was taken care by Danny Bordman, one of the crews in the ship virginia. 1900 was the year when the crew discovered the baby, thus, the boy was named 1900. Danny loved 1900 very much, he taught him to read and write,and never let him suffer. But because there is no any documents such as birth certificate, Danny was afraid that 1900 would be hurted by others, so he told him not to leave the ship. Danny died several years later and at that time, 1900wan entirely isolated. 1900 was a geinius and he knew how to play piano without being taught.He got his own style and won the applause from the passengers. However he wasn’t happy at all. What he was searching for was love and care. Yet he couldn’t find them.So 1900 suffered from loneliness and was afraid of changes.
The only companion of 1900 was the piano, and he got used to expressing himself via music. Yet could the piano share with him? Could the music bo the tonic for his loneliness? The poor man has no choice.He was born to be loneliness. Maybe it was his fate.
A few years later, 1900 became a pianist at Virginia band. Though he had never been off the boat, he could imagine everything in the world.
In a storm, he encountered Max who was seesick.The two men were very congenial. From the on, Max became 1900’s life confidant.
Max admired 1900’s music talent, but was also sorrry for his stubborn refuse to get onto the land. He wanted 1900 to show his talents, and be recognised by the world, gain fame and forture, live a good life. But for 1900, the world was too far away. He couldn’t understand it.
Later, people praised 1900’s music talents. The father of jazz, Jelly Roll Morton, who considered himself unsurpassable, thus to challenge with 1900. Eventually 1900 won. The game brought 1900 with reputation. A music publisher hoped his recording, and guaranteed that he would be rich and famous. Until he met a girl, who was simple and charming.That day he wan recording, the girl came to wash her face. She dried her face with a towel, and looked at the window as a mirror. At that moment, 1900 fell in love with her, and played a sentimental beautiful song.
When the record was finished,1900 didn’t give the record to the publisher, because he didn’t let others to take his music away from him. He wanted to send it to the unknown girl, but failed. 1900 could not conceal his sorrow, he threw thw ieces
in the trash.Max hide the fragments in the piano, and that was the only record of music 1900 left.
After the girl left the boat, 1900 was still playing his piano, but his heart was still missing the girl.Max persuasion and longing for love moved 1900, he finally decided to get off the ship and get onto the strange land. That day, all the crew said goodbye to him, he wore a camel’s hair coat that Max gave to him, slowly stepped oat ladder, but when he got halfway of the ladder, he looked at the large New York blankly, gazed for a moment, suddenly removed the hat and threw it out. Then 1900 tured arround and returned to the boat. He said to Max that he would never get off, since then he lost the world on the land.
Untill many year later, the World War Two ended, and long after Max left Virginia, Max got a news that the ship would be exploded. He believed that 1900 was still on the boat , but 1900 did not appear. Untill the ship was about to be blowed up. Max played the record in the boat alone, 1900 appeared in the corner, but he refused to get off. He told the reason why he failed to get out: the world was too wide, and he was afraid of strangers, the endless city streets, like the innumberable keys on the piano, made him feel fare.He would quiz the stage of life rather than face the endless life. Max couldn’t persuade him to get off,
and left saldly. Finally he saw the boat and 1900 destroyed by bombs in the distance.
Though it is a tragedy, but I think 1900 is a brave hero. He is a man so brave, that he can play the imaginary piano when exploded with the ship he was born, lived and died in. Yet he is a man so scared, that he canno face the city life we are living everyday. He is a man so perceptive, taht he could use his music language to describe exactly other’secrets.
Yet he is a man so insensitive that he’d rather diappear after a gentle kiss on his beloved while she’s aspleep than unburden himself and tell her ‘I LOVE YOU’.
This man is Danny Berdman T.D. Lemon 1900 who is also known as simply "1900". A man never existed. He has never set foot on land in his entire life. No ID. No passport. No Visa. No parents. No birthday. Nothing in the world belongs to him except his music. So he played it.
For the first class guests.
For the third class members.
For the girl at the window.
For the darkness of the night.
For the heartbeat of his own.
For the sea-- his eternal home.
My life is much more colorful than 1900, but Why? Why I am so envious of 1900’s simple life? I am envious of his loneliness, his pure mind, his natural, native face.
We are all distinctive at first,but when we grow up. We learn to think about other’s feelings,other’s attitude to us.
So we try to do something we don’t really want to do to please them.We are trying to get along with the people.We are trying to adapt ourselves to the society.Maybe sometimes the results were disappointing.We still try our best to do such things.
However,in fact,we are changed.
We are trying to be someone else.
The impression of 《the legend 1900》 《The Legend of 1900》 showed us a man who borned ,growed up and died in the ship。The born of his life was just for the piano。It also just looked like our real life, someone might be not willing to leave his homeland all his life, even the land was barren, desolateand dangerous, and even the outside world was numerous and colorful, gold and silver throughout all the land。 For a man whose home was this ship, his full happy ，sad ，dream passion were all in this ship。 Therefore ，he still won't choose to leave finally 。There was a monologue of the masters, he said that his choice was not for seeing the building which maked him feel afraid。The end of world was out of sight ，which was the truth。 Piano keys and the ship decks could be feld from the beginning to the ending。He could use the limited keyboard to creat infinite music 。In here, he could control it。In here ， he just was himself。There were no beginning and end in this world, he had no way to control his life, emotion and music。 He only could choose what he could choose, what he could drive the life way。If there was a life style which he couldn't drive, he would rather discard it ! A lot of people could not understand his choice, however, I want to remind one thing that this was his choice。There must have his reasons
behind one’s choice , you never could become another one , and you didn't have his experience, so you didn't really know what he thought。 The only one thing you could do was to make your choice a
nd go your way。
The legend of 1900 After watching this film, I can’t hold my tears back. Not only dose it
touched me, but also it described the classical life of a man who has God’s arms. In addition, 1900's story is told via flashback and reflection by Max, a friend of 1900's of whom he spent many years with on the ship, and played the trumpet along side him in the jazz orchestra.
1900 is a talent. When he first touched the piano, he played it excellent. And his spirit is random, he once said :” Fuck the regulation .” He thought his music belongs to the soul, belongs to people who understand it, belongs to the freedom. 1900 never set his foot on the land except when he encountered his love. But when he had already packaged his things and stood on the stairs, he flinched. Then he never step out of the ship, even never go down the stairs. After the war ended ,the ship was too old to carry people and it would be exploded.1900’s friend, his only friend found 1900 still in the ruined ship. But our adamant pianist was stuck with his determination, to him , the ship is all, the ship is his whole world. Before his death, 1900 tells the reasons for not treading on land when he’s walking down the ladder. “ I’m not afraid of what I can see, I’m afraid of what I can’t see”, 1900 is frightened as he can’t see the end of the city. Finally his friend left 1900 sorrowfully, watched the ship being bombed, a talent disappeared, the legend of 1900 ended.
It’s a classical movie. Although the movie is untrue, it closes to our heart, it strucked me, what about you?1900 once told his only friend, Max :” Land? Land is a ship too big for me. It's a woman too beautiful; it's a voyage too long, a perfume too strong. It's a music I don't know how to make. I could never get off this ship.” I think it’s a symbol of weakness. Poor 1900 is afraid of being hurt. With no doubt, loneliness adversely affects his personality. He fear change his temporary condition, he wants his everyday life remains the same. he fear that if he left the ship everything would out of control. It’s quite lamentable that he could win over the piano master, but he couldn’t win over himself. He lived in their own world, and other people weren’t able to walk in.
In the movie, when Max told others the story of his friend,nobody believed. At last, the moving story only made Max bring back his trumpet. I once believed that when 1900 bombed with the ship, the ending is perfect. But the ordinary end seems more touched. Just as Max said:” Sooner or later all stories ended.” No matter how popular the story was, it would ensed. And 1900 only lives in Max’s memory.
The music, which I feel make the film more perfect ,all by Ennio Morricone, is wonderful. I loved how scenes would just be time after time of 1900 pounding out notes. It reminded me of "Tango" in the sense that you were watching it more for its dancing and cheorography than its storytelling; "The Legend of 1900" was interesting mostly for its musical capabilities.
What’s more, the music could deeply embody the emotion of the lonely man and made us know more about the film.
Our life is also a performance, but without fixed script, everybody around you is audience, but they have different goal and attitude; everybody around you is actor, they act different stories.
The world needs legend. Perhaps 1900 would have a beauty as lifelong companion, we may thought if they would live happily. Perhaps when 1900 go to the land, he would become wealthy and famous, but we would also thought, a ship or a world, which is more important. Because when 1900 had his lover, he would not be the classical people, when 1900 set his foot on the land, he would not be the legend. To build a legend, the director made 1900 married with a piano. And we could feel 1900’s real friend is piano. 1900 is very familiar with the emotion which the piano convey, but persons’ exchange can not get it. May be it’s a little sad, it is true.

The film is about a piano genius’ legendary life. The hero whole life is a tragedy but it is full of legend. In 1900, the orphan was abandoned on a cruise of Virginian. A boiler worker adopted the kid and named him 1900. However, the worker died in an accident, so 1900 again became orphans again at a very young age. 1900 growed and showed extraordinary piano talent, which made him a self-taught pianist playing, piano on board. Every person heard him play were deeply moved. Jazz progenitor Zujie Ni heard of his talent expertise. So he went on have a competation and admitted defeat.But fate has made him profoundly want to stay away from the ordinary life. All these things were ccurred on board, he never dared to disembark from the shore , because the edifices in New York and the steady stream of people made him disorientcited. Though he met a girl and it was love after thinking twice he at first sight, gave up the desire to go ashore to find first love. The world is too wide for 1900, so that he was afraid of strangeness, those endless streets were like countless keybroads as there is no end to his fear that he would rather quit in the stage of life, giving himself an end, rather than facing a the misenxies of life. He will always remain on board, until the only good friend Jeni warned hin of the bad news that the ship is going to be bombed . But he would not leave, so from birth to death he hadnever left Virginia's and died when the ship was bombed.
1900, the one that neither has the birth record,nor identification, did not leave any trace and disappeared, as same as the music notes .His extraordinary life has started in the sea and end in the sea. His soul was melted the sea long ago.

Though there is, in fact, nearly no conversation between them, they even don’t know one another. He still wants to be surrounded by the crowd. 1900 doesn’t want to be alone; he enjoys the time being accompanied by people. This can explain why he feels so disappointed, frustrated and he stops playing the piano when the crowd leaves as the destination is reached. 1900 has to become solitary again!
One of the passengers admires his talents very much and tries to talk to him. The farmer shares with him about his misfortune and loneliness. 1900 knows the feeling better than anybody does as he has been suffering for 27 years! He hasn’t disclosed his feeling to others; he just says that he gets a friend sharing the similar situation. It’s a paradox that on the one hand, he wants to speak out his own feeling, which has buried in his heart for a long time, and shares with people; on the other hand, he can’t pluck up his courage to mention his situation in front of people. Maybe it is of no use to tell others or 1900 doesn’t want anyone to sympathize him.
Loneliness makes him afraid of contacting strangers, lack of confidence and shy while communicating with strangers. When there’re two strangers coming to inform him the competition, he runs away and hides himself. Poor 1900 is afraid of being hurt. With no doubt, loneliness adversely affects his personality. On the shipboard, a young, pure, beautiful girl has caught his attention. He loves the girl and wants to send her a gift. He doesn’t know how to initiate the conversation. 1900 practices again and again in the cabinet. He is too timid to send the girl his record. His personality makes him miss a chance. 1900 is very unhappy and breaks the record. Again, he just keeps his mouth shut and never shares with the others. It is obvious that he no longer wants to share, he is too tired to find opportunities to air his feeling.
Changes make 1900 scared, he wants his everyday life remains the same. For 27 years, he stays on board and never treads on land. Although his crews always persuade him to get off, he is reluctant to try. Several months after the girl had left, 1900 suddenly wants to tread on land. His reason is that he wants to listen to the voice of the sea as he can only hear it clearly on land. However, it’s true that he wants to find the girl and expresses love to her. 1900 hides his feeling again. Yet, when he is on the halfway of the ladder that leads to the land, he stops. He stands there to look at the city in front of him. 1900 gives up treading on land and returns to the ship.
1900 can live safely on the ship as he can see the ends of the ship. Many years later, as the ship is too old and it needs to be exploded to pieces. One of the crew knows that he will be still on the ship. He tries to find him. Before his death, 1900 tells the reasons for not treading on land when he’s walking down the ladder. “ I’m not afraid of what I can see, I’m afraid of what I can’t see”, 1900 is frightened as he can’t see the end of the city. “ Where is the end of the world?” Moreover, there’re only two thousand passengers on broad at a time. He takes the piano as an example, “ There are finite keys on the piano”, and he can make “infinite music” out of it. However, the world is a piano that is too big for him. There are infinite keys in the world, how can he make music out of it? It implies that there are so many changes in the world; he can hardly face the challenges. “There are thousands of streets in the city„which one should I choose to die?” It shows that 1900 is scared by the ever-changing world and he is too tired to choose. He thinks that he can’t adapt to the changes as “ the world has passed me (him) by”. In addition, fame, fortune, girl can’t make him tread on land. 1900 chooses to die on the ship rather than getting off. It can be seen that how deeply he is afraid of changes. 【简介】
