Passage A

(来自2016中考英语模拟)阅读下面短文或图表,并选择正确答案。

One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest(卑微的)to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.

We cautiously(小心翼翼) began a conversation and spoke about a wide rang of things. We never introduced ourselves. I thought that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,

“May I get you something ?”

“A coffee would be nice.”

Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked, “How did you get to know Mr. Gal breath?” “Who?”

“The man you were sitting with. He is the chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs.”

I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world’s richest and most powerful men!

Why are your study habits different from those of your friends? Why do you seem to learn faster in some classes while more slowly in others ? One reason you may not know is that people have different learning types. Scientists say there are three different learning types: Visual(视觉型), Auditory(听觉型) and kinesthetic(动觉型).

Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily remember information from pictures, graphs(图表) and videos, you are probably a visual learner. You’re not good at copying down what the teacher says in class. Never mind. You can draw graphs or pictures instead, if you find that works better for you.

Auditory learners learn best by hearing. If you seem to easily remember things by hearing them, then you are probably an auditory learner. You must listen carefully while the teacher is speaking because it’s the easiest way for you to learn. Sometimes you may find that taking notes stops you from listening carefully. After class, you can write down what you remember or borrow your friends’ notes to copy. Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing. If you seem to learn best by working with your hands, you are probably a kinesthetic learner. Taking notes by writing can make you pay close attention to information as you receive it. Of course, you can learn best by making full use of labs or other class activities.

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are the good examples. They have developed technology and brought great progress to human besides making money for themselves.

Older people should believe that it is never too late to dream and that human mind is never too old to make dreams turn into reality. It’s great fun to have friends. But sometimes you can be puzzled (困惑的) what gift to give to them. My advice is that it mainly depends on what they like and how much you can pay. All your friends are different in some ways, so you should know each of them very well.

If you think your friend loves something expensive and always wants to be a center of attraction(吸引), then try to give him or her an expensive gift like a cool T-shirt or a beautiful handbag. Or you can also plan a surprise party for them with more friends in a good place. Of course, it doesn’t mean that they will get angry if you give them a simple gift. They prefer to receive gifts which are

thoughtful. On the other hand, some friends never expect to get an expensive gift. They will love anything that makes them feel special.

So, a rose, a card or a message may be the best gift for them. It’s just that they would be happier to get the gifts above.

Even you can take them to the beach, talk to them for hours about how lucky you are to have him or her as your friend.

Be sure we give gifts or best wishes to each other to make our friendship stronger. And then we will have every happy moment with each other.

62. The Chinese meaning of the word “thoughtful” in this passage is ______.

A. 用心的 B. 时尚的 C. 昂贵的 D. 便宜的
