Keep your dream alive【乞力马扎罗的雪】
Everyone should have a dream ,it is important that keeping your dream alive. When you are growing old as a player before ,do you remember your first lover？When you are going to die ,do you remember your initial dream? When you stand the foot of Kilimanjaro ,please pluck up your courage like before,keep your dream alive.
Kilimanjaro is a snow covered mountain 19,710 feet high, and it is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Masai "Ngàje Ngài," the House of God. Close to the western summit is the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude. The whole novel never mention the leopard ,but I know the leopard is seeking--dream
Harry's life was failure through his memory. He was tired of life under the complicated social culture when he was a poor writer. Harry do not know what to do under pression: he saw death---Williamson, the bombing officer,died On the battlefield; he saw cruel----he sent exchange of populations into the mountain. And it was snow they tramped along until they died that winter ; he saw grim---the host of hotel suicide under bankrupt. It makes harry became cowardly. He avoid the dream and stay with different women . Actually ,harry still need honor like human need . He felt guilt that he rely on wealthy women. So he made the safari in Africa,unlucky ,he was inflected,and he dead at last . It is just a coincidence superficially ,but it is not coincidence that he came to Kilimanjaro . Africa was the place where he had the happiest time in his life, so he had come to there to start again.There was no hardship; but there was also no luxury and he thought he could get back into training that way. That in some way he could work the fat off his soul the way a fighter went into the mountains to work and train in order to burn it out of his body. He came back to find his dream.
He did not came back at last,just the leopard died on the Kilimanjaro,they had never climbed on the top of the mountain. But harry made a fantasy that he climbed on the top of mountain under death.he saw a pink sifting cloud, moving over the ground, and in the【乞力马扎罗的雪】【乞力马扎罗的雪】
air, like the first snow in a blizzard that comes from nowhere, and he knew the locusts were coming up from the South. Then they began to climb and they were going to the East it seemed, and then it darkened and they were in a storm, the rain so thick it seemed like they are flying through a waterfall, and then they got out and Compie turned his head a, grinned , pointed and there, ahead, all he could see, as wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun, was the square top of Kilimanjaro. And then he knew that there was where he was going. He found his dream in his soul.
Ernest Hemingway American literary genius writer is the twentieth century, with its concise language, concise narrative and Iceberg principle with deep implications, varieties of implied meanings and symbol colors. Ernest Hemingway’s “iceberg theory”, presented by the metaphor, suggests that the writer include in the text only a small portion of what he knows, leaving about ninety percent of the content a mystery that grows beneath the surface of the writing. Especially in his famous short story The Snows of Kilimanjaro, a lot of use of metaphor makes the novel its artistic creation of the classic.
The title of the novel The Snows of Kilimanjaro contains two metaphors. “Kilimanjaro is a snow covered mountain 19,710 feet high, and it is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Masai "Ngàje Ngài," the House of God.” In the sentence, Hemingway used the mountain to metaphor lofty and immortal. At the same time, the “dried and frozen carcass of a leopard” which close to the western summit refers to the pursuit of lofty spirit.
In addition to the high mountain, the title of the novel and article has mentioned "snow" for many times. In instance, the snow, in “a snow covered mountain” and “the snow was so bright”, metaphor the purity and truth which embodies metaphorical concept that “white is purity”. In western culture, white is the symbol of human life in the Garden of Eden naivety, also a symbol of human's pursuit of goals, the purification of the soul. In Christianity, the bride wears a white wedding dress, the angels in heaven also wearing a white gown, so white snow refers to mental state of high purity.
Death is a common theme in Hemingway's works. As novel describing a writer who was dying, Hemingway used lots of metaphor to describe the Harry died before state of mind and feelings. For examples, “there were three of the big birds squatted obscenely, while in the sky a dozen more sailed, making quick-moving shadows as they passed.” “He looked over to where the huge, filthy birds sat, their naked heads sunk in the hunched feathers. A fourth planed down, to run quick-legged and then waddle slowly toward the others. ” “'Never believe any of that about a scythe and a skull,' he told her. 'It can be two bicycle policemen as easily or be a bird. Or it can have a wide snout like a hyena.' ” The breeze, sickle, skeletons, two policemen, a bird and hyenas are metaphors death. Metaphor of death the breeze could always blows out the candle of the people's fragile life, sickle and skeleton is the sign of the god of death, the quiet police represents the inevitable of death is coming, while the bird and hyenas metaphor body was bite pecking tore at after death.
