《silent night -平安夜 》(德语：stille nacht, heilige nacht)是一首非常流行的传统圣诞歌曲。其原始的歌词由josef mohr用德语写成，作曲则是由奥地利一所小学的校长franz gruber完成。此歌被翻译成世界上超过44种语言，是最流行的聖誕歌曲。没有音乐伴奏人们也会经常吟唱。
1818年12月25日，这首颂歌第一次在奥地利奥本多夫(oberndorf)的尼古拉教堂演出。mohr虽在2年前就写出了歌词，但在这个平安夜才带给gruber，请他编一首吉他伴奏曲子。他这样做的原因不明，也许mohr只是想为午夜弥撒作一首新的颂歌;另有传说当晚尼古拉教堂的管风琴不能工作(说因为老鼠咬坏了管风琴的风箱)。
《平安夜》原始手稿已经遗失，不过1995年发现了一份经研究确定于为mohr写于1820年左右的手稿，显示mohr在1816年被分配到奥地利mariapfarr清教徒教堂时写了歌词，还显示gruber在1818年曾为为歌词作曲。这是现存的最早的手稿，也是唯一由mohr的笔迹所写。gruber所作的乐曲由于受到当地音乐的影响，其旋律类似于奥地利民间音乐和岳得尔歌。 关于这首歌的另一个说法是，第一次演出后，它很快就被人们忘记了，直到修管风琴的师傅1825年发现了手稿才重新上演。gruber在贯穿他的整个生命的时间里都在改编它。现有的mohr改编版(约1820年)保存在萨尔兹堡carolino augusteum博物馆。
《平安夜》的曲调和歌词，搭配得天衣无缝，聆听的人，不论是否基督徒，都会为之动容。如果说它是世界上最美妙动人的歌曲之一，相信没人会反对的。
